Facebook Promote {Is it helpful…or not?}

By now, most small business owners have seen posts or heard about FB popping up with their new Promote button. I got mine yesterday. (Does that mean they consider me worthy enough to try to get revenue from me? ☺)

There has been so much talk about it but nothing concrete for us to go on…until they added it all with their Help button that gave us some insight about what the Promote button was all about.

Have they been hiding our posts from our fans? No, but they don’t guarantee that everyone sees them. If you like 300 pages, are you really going to sort through the posts that each one makes or will you be doing a quick scan to see what is out there? Chances are you are either doing the quick scan or hiding pages that post too much.

From the Help Page:

“Nothing has changed about how your posts are shared with the people who like your Page.

A lot of activity happens on Facebook and most people only see some of it in their news feeds. They may miss things when they’re not on Facebook, or they may have a lot of friends and Pages, which results in too much activity to show all of it in their news feed.

If you don’t promote your post, many of the people connected to your Page may still see it. However, by promoting a post, you’re increasing its potential reach so an even larger percentage of your Page audience and the friends of those interacting with your post will see it.”

The solution to that is the Promote button. It is kind of like a FB ad, but it is for your fans and followers. What the Promote button will do is keep your post visible for a set number of days on your fans wall. It will keep moving it up so that they will see it. It’s purpose is to let more people see a post that you do. It will also show you how many people (and what percent of your fans) that you have reached with that post.

You can also Promote in a specific location. Are you doing mini sessions in the park? Well, then you don’t need to reach your fans that live in other parts of the country or the world. You just need to reach your local fans. And the Promote button will give you that opportunity.

So, yes, we all dread new changes in FB, but we have to adapt and roll with them. They aren’t going to undo them, so we have to make the most of it and figure out how to use those changes to our advantage! The jury is still out on whether this will help your small business or not. We will just have to wait and see!

  1. So great to see business owners getting involved and learning this stuff. It takes a lot of work – trust me! I do it for a living!

    Important to remember, that really, these Promoted Posts are no different from Facebook Ads. In Facebook Ads, you always had the option of 'advertising' one of your recent page posts (it was called a Sponsored Story). And you always had the option to show only to fans of your page (or even show only to friends of fans of your page). A lot of people didnt even know these were ads! They showed up under 'sponsored' but looked like normal page posts.
